The Central University of Rajasthan was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No. 25 of 2009) on 20th March, 2009 as a Central University, andis fully funded by the Government of India.

The President of India, Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, is the Visitor of Central University of Rajasthan.

The President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the University, has appointed Prof. M. M. Salunkhe as the First Vice Chancellor of the University.

The "objects of the University" as envisaged in the Central Universities Act 2009 are:
"to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to make special provisions for integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, science and technology in its educational programmes; to take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning process and inter-disciplinary studies and research; to educate and train manpower for the development of the country; to establish linkages with industries for the promotion of science and technology; and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.."

The University is newly established. The decision about location and allocation of the land to the University is pending with the Central Government.

State of Rajasthan has a total population (2001 Census) of about 5,65,07,188, the urban population being 23.38%. The literacy rate is 61.03% with male-75.7% and female      - 43.9%. The major industries in Rajasthan are mineral, agro and heritage based. The strengths of Rajasthan include abundant availability of minerals, open & responsive government, proximity to Gurgaon and Delhi, which are now getting saturated, relatively better law and  order scenario as compared to many other states in North India, very good living conditions - good civic infrastructure, residential, educational and medical facilities, road, power & water, avenues for recreation and tourism. Rajasthan is having good road network. It is extensively connected through a network of state and national highways and has well developed road network in cities. The state taps power from conventional and non-conventional sources. It has industrial estates across the state and has continuously improving telecommunication infrastructure, presence of major nationalized and commercial banks like ICICI, HDFC, UTI, Citibank, HSBC, Standard Charted etc. The state places great emphasis on technical manpower – it has  large number of Engineering colleges and premier international level IT training institutes like BITS Pilani and LNMIIT functioning in Rajasthan, with IIT, IIM, Central University of Rajasthan and World Class University already announced this year.

Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, a premier institute, is one of the twenty NIT’s in the country. Institute was established as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan in 1963. MNIT campus spreads over 325 acres of lush green area in the heart of Jaipur city. It is about 9 Kms from the main railway station, about 8 Kms from the central bus stand (Sindhi Camp) and about 8 Kms from the airport.
At present, the Institute offers undergraduate and post graduate courses (M.Tech. / M.Sc. & Ph.D) to about 4000 students in almost all leading fields of engineering, technology, management & sciences. Through the internationally renowned faculty, laboratories with state of the art equipments, and excellent infrastructure, the Institute is actively engaged in research, consultancy and developmental activities besides imparting technical education.
